How can I learn about “social media” for my business?

I was part of a panel discussion at the Philadelphia Center CIty Proprietors Association yesterday on Using Internet Technology to Market your Business. Here are lots of local Philadelphia resources for you to use to learn about social media and marketing technology overall. Everyone wants/needs to learn about what options they have to market their business, especially in these tough times.

Each topic was handled in a panel format. The panels included   “Technology in Marketing”, “Email Marketing”, “Video and Podcasting”, “Blogging”, and “Social Networking”.

The “Technology in Marketing” panel consisted of a couple of CEO’s who use lots of technology and social media to market their businesses,- Alex Hillman of IndyHall, Blake Jannelle, CEO, Anthillz, and Chuck Sacco, CEO, PhindMe, as well Steve Butler, Director of Programming, KYW NewsRadio.

The “Email Marketing” panel consisted of Audrey Julienne, President, Raison d’Etre and Rick Simmons, President, Dinkum Interactive.

“Video and Podcasting” was handled by a single presenter – Steve Lubetkin, Managing Partner, Lubetkin & Co. Communications, LLC.

The “Blogging” panel was Chris Krewson, Executive Editor for Online News,, together with Valeria Maltoni, Director of Marketing and Conversation Agent.

The “Social Networking” panel was Beth Harte, Marketing Manager and social media blogger at The Harte of Marketing and myself, Ed Callahan, a C-level Sales Advisor, who helps companies grow their topline profitably.

The organizers of the event asked that Beth and I send the references books we mentioned during our presentation. I think using a social media technology like blogging to provide that information seemed fitting.

Beth and I listed five books as follows,-

1. Groundswell, Winning in a World Transformed by Social Technologies by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff,

2. The New Influencers: A Marketers Guide to the New Social Media by Paul Gillin,

3. Now Is Gone, A Primer on New Media for Executives and Entrepreneurs by Geoff Livingston,

4. Marketing to the Social Web: How Digital Customer Communities Build Your Business by Larry Weber, and

5. The New Rules of Marketing and PR: How to Use News Release, blogs, Podcasting, Viral Marketing and Online Media to Reach Buyers Directly by David Meerman Scott.

I also mentioned a wonderful website, CommonCraft – Explanations in Plain English, where you can view very simple effective and short videos explaining various technologies, like Social Media, Twitter, Blogs, Social Networking, and Podcasting.

Ed – what you failed to mention because you are modest is the tremendous job you and Beth did on your part and the tremendous interest in your presentation – thank you once again for your participation.
