Where Do Good Ideas Come From?

By December 14, 2010 One Comment

Steven Johnson has written a thought provoking book, entitled “Where Do Good Ideas Come From? The Natural History of Evolution.” You can find it here on Amazon in both written and electronic form (Kindle).

A colleague and friend of mine, Ron Stroeble, Owner of Videonet, Inc., highlighted a YouTube video in his 11/15/10 newsletter, which explains in cartoon form the premise of the book. It will be four minutes entertainingly spent. Here it is on YouTube.

That video led me to find Steven Johnson’s talk on the same idea at a 9/21/10 TED meeting in London. This is a much longer video, but as you may know, all TED talks are limited to 18 minutes maximum.

It’s worth the time. He answers such intriguing questions as “Where do ideas have sex?”.  He also tells the story of how the launching of Sputnik in 1957 led to a modern technology that is pervasive today in everyday life. Finally, he suggests “Chance favors the connected mind”. I love that statement.

The challenge for all business owners is how to use these concepts to enhance and grow our businesses. I’d love to hear what you think about how to promote creativity and innovation in your business.

If you can’t see the video below, you can find it here on YouTube.
